Halcyon days denote a fortnight of calm weather during winter. The idiom is inspired by a legend that, like most Greek myths, involves hybris and nemesis... Let’s discover it!
The Story of Halcyone
Once upon a time, Halcyone and Ceyx, reigned the region of Trachis. Their prosperity was such that they dared to nickname themselves Hera and Zeus. Offended by their arrogance, Zeus killed Ceyx and Halcyone threw herself into the sea.
They were both transformed into seabirds, condemned to eternally nest in sea-beaten rocks during winter. Alas, the harshness of the elements was such that they were doomed to remain childless!
But sometimes gods feel compassion for the sorrows of men and Zeus’s wrath was softened; he granted them a few days of calm weather in the heart of winter, a brief interlude of summer that would become known as ‘Halcyon Days’. Now it’s time to live your myth in Santorini!
